Distress it with several different items and a hammer, such as hitting a nail on it’s side, hitting a washer or chain..give it some hammer marks. Then paint it.You can also sand edges and other marks into the paint to make it look worn. Use a very fine sandpaper.
The best thing to do would go to Home Depot. They have kinds of kits for doing distressed antiquing .
There are three basic ways to make new furniture look old.
One is to paint the piece and then use some 220 grit sand paper to remove some of the paint in selected places just as constant use would do. That means edges, around drawer pulls and some random area on the flat surfaces.
You can also do this using two colors. A dark color over a light color or a light color over a dark one. When you sand away the top coat in selected places, you expose the under coat and it looks like the pieces has been painted several times.
The second way to provide a antique look is to use a contrasting or darker glaze after you have painted the piece. The glaze is basically a thin slow drying paint. You brush it on the piece and then wipe most of it off using a soft cloth. You leave some of the glaze in the various nooks and crannies of the piece and corners of doors, drawers, etc.
You can also increase the old look by adding fly specks using a old tooth brush to flick bits of glaze on the surface. This takes a bit of practice and is usually the last thing you do.
Some glazes can be left unprotected and others need sealer on top to protect them.
If you are interested in the use of a glaze, go to your local paint store (usually not Walmart, Lowes or HD) and ask for some information and instructions on how to use the glaze. More paint stores are happy to give you help.
There is also the crackled paint look but that isn’t always the best thing for a beginner to try. If you mess up it takes alot more work to start over than the other techniques.
