Wow, sheets of leather… Yes, it’s normal for a dog that is swallowing rawhide nearly whole. Since your dog is not chewing, there is a high likelyhood that one day he will get a blockage in his intestines. This could be fatal or cost around $2000 to fix through surgery.
Im soooo confused by that Q! sheets of leather?? my springer doesnt do that!
Obviously he is not chewing but biting off hunks and swallowing them whole. İ suggest you buy the real bones that have been processes with flavoring and give those to him instead as he will get the same chewing enjoyment without having to worry about hım getting some of the leather stuck in his intestines.
He is evidently not digesting them and they are passing through him inact.
I personally think that rawhides are the most dangerous things anyone can give to a dog. They chew them for a while until they are soft and leathery and then just swallow them whole,
I used to give them to my dogs but spent most of the time fishing huge slimy chunks out of their mouths when they got stuck in their throat nearly causing them to choke. They were banned from my doggie household years ago.
It would be far better to give your Springer raw marrow bones from your Butcher or the smokey bones which you can buy from the Pet Shop.
Unfortunately, this is not unusual and is exactly why you should NOT let him have rawhide. Dogs don’t know there is a difference between chewy treats and food. To them, it is all food and many will scarf down the biggest pieces they possibly can. Luckily, your dog has passed the chunks of rawhide, but since he’s eating rawhide rather than chewing and nibbling slowly, he runs the risk of developing a blockage which is expensive and can be deadly. I don’t know if it would help, but maybe try compressed rawhide bones…they might be more difficult to bite off big chunks.
