When innocent people suffer misfortune, why do they suffer “double abuse “when would-be comforters suggest that God punishes only the wicked?

It pains me to say this, but I really think it makes more sense to try and watch your own back than let God watch it for you. S/ he’s doing a horrible job.
If you want to punish the wicked, do it yourself, God won’t do jack.
Who can say that they haven’t committed some act or another? Can a little kid say that they have never said something mean to their friends? Can adult say that he/she has never told a lie? Yes, God punishes the wicked and we are all wicked because we all do wrong things. But it’s God’s grace, mercy and love that he doesn’t punish us for every fricken horrible thing that we do.
I grew up in a church, and I heard crap like this all of the time. It’s amazing to me how vastly ignorant and simple-minded people can be. One woman I knew from church said that women get raped because they wear short skirts. Every year at the AIDS walk in LA, there are "christians" who hold up signs that say AIDS is a "punishment" from God for people who are gay. The reality is that we live in a very broken world. Sometimes we suffer as a result of our own bad choices, sometimes we suffer as a result of the bad choices of other people, and sometimes we just suffer for no apparent reason. There are little boys and little girls that get kidnapped, raped, and murdered, and I’m sure it’s not because they were wearing short skirts. There are babies that are born HIV+ through no fault of their own. I saw a story once on Oprah about a woman who had murdered her first baby. She went to jail, and, when she got out, she decided to have another baby who she then also murdered (out of anger). Yet there are wonderful couples who desperately want to have children who can’t get pregnant. Unfortunately, I decided that I couldn’t stand to be around the ignorance, and I finally left the church. I grew up in an abusive home, and I have a lot of issues as a result of being abused. I decided that the church wasn’t a healthy place for me, and I needed to protect myself.
They could only suffer this if they believed that piece of bullshit. They have their own faith in god, being a just and fair God, he would not need to interfere in all dealings on earth. When bad things happen, they happen to the good and bad, but true followers of god help all in need, and do not judge them, based on their own beliefs.
