How can I wash a quilt without having the red bleed onto the rest of it?

My mother in law made us this quilt but she forgot to wash the red before she assembled it. How can I wash it without having the red bleed onto the rest?

Soak it in full strength white vinegar before washing. The vinegar sets the colors.
There is something on the market called ‘dye grabber’ or something like that, it is sheets (like dryer sheets, but for the washer). One of the quilt groups I belong to has been talking about, will find it near the Shout section of laundry. Also, use a front loader washer for your quilt. Agitating washers tear up quilts, so do dryers, want to ruin them quick-use the those items.
When I wash my quilts that I’ve used hand dyes on I use the color catchers in the laundry aisle of stores- a handful of them or I use synthropol that we use to wash hand dyes before use. And I’ve never had a problem
The name of the product is "Color Catcher" and it is made by the people who make Shout. It really works. Just put it in the washing machine and if there is color to come out of the quilt, it will end up in the sheet. Find a box in the laundry aisle.

If your going to wash it my best advice would be to wash and rinse using only cold water. Also use a detergent such a Woolite & use the most delecate cycle your machine offers
Woah…be careful! Not only does washing a quilt often ruin the inner workings, but if the red bleeds, it might never be the same. Consult a local dry cleaner.
