I am reading the book Green Chic. The author talks about a number of chemicals used to treat sheets prior to packaging. She recommends using organic sheets only. She swears you can’t wash the chemicals out of the sheets.
I hate being sold fear. And I don’t have the money to go change all my sheets over to organic (or listen to most of the advice she gives).
Do you think organic cotton is safer? Is there a way to wash traditional cotton sheets to get the chemicals out?

Hi We have recently invested in organic mattresses for our two babies as we believe that the chemicals in normal mattresses maybe harmful to our babies. However, do we now need to buy organic cotton sheets or would the chemicals and pesticides in these sheets be washed out in a normal washing machine?

I had an overnight guest, and she slept on a guest bed. This was an air mattress made of vinyl. The mattress has a distinct vinyl odor; previously I disregarded this and didn’t know that the chemicals used to make the vinyl are very toxic.
Another thing I also didn’t know was that my friend was pregnant!
Now I’m worried; could the exposure have harmed the fetus? Any chemists or biochemists around who could educate me?

I am thinking that I want to buy an all organic mattress pad for my baby but they seem to be to hard to find. I came across these mattress covers that are supposed to keep the chemicals from a non-organic pad from getting to baby. What do you think? Should I go for the 100% organic mattress pad or buy a regular one and put a cover on it?
Here is a site about the mattress covers

I have found some "organic" mattress’s that claim to be all organic but looking into it they contain chemicals

This is counter intuitive, but my family won’t stop pestering me about the bed bug treatment I ordered. I’m trying to do well for these people, but they keep saying that spraying chemicals on the box spring/bed frame and in the dresser chests will contaminate clothing and be toxic to them–and potentially poison or kill them.
Isn’t it a little counter intuitive to think that a bed bug treatment would be harmful to humans? Do they have a point?

Our new Serta mattress was just delivered and taken out of the plastic, and it smells like chemicals. Is this normal? Is it harmful? What can I do to help the smell dissipate? I opened the windows in the room, and didn’t put any bedding on it.

Thnx melly. And the reason why I said no chemicals is because we live 5km away from pharmacys and stuff because we live on a farm.

I have white sheets at home and I can never get them white again. I know it’s not staining from the bleach I use because the fitted sheet is stained and the pillow cases are stained while the “loose” sheet is not. I’d like to try some home remedies before I go out and buy some more chemicals. As well, I can’t hang my sheets to dry in the sun because we don’t have a fence to hang a clothes line on and we don’t have anything for the sheets to hang off of outside.
Just a note — I wash the whole set together, the two sheets and two pillowcases. So that’s how I know it’s not the bleach.

What kind of chemicals are contained in fire blankets? How do they chemically react to stop the fire? Please be specific in terms of the reactions involved, the mechanism, (relating to bond strength, breaking bonds, etc).

in regards to pure wool quits with cotton stitched cover
just worried about possible chemicals used to treat fabric, and wondering if these chemicals will cure away after a certain period.
bugsnthings – I’m guessing you’re the type who never washes your new clothes, even after years of use?

I want to freshen my children’s mattress. I’ve cleaned it indoors using chemicals and clorox but it takes forever to dry and leaves a watermark stain.
I know this is "country", but I had a notion that since we’re going through a drought season, I want to take it outside, douse it with cleaners and hose it down! I know it will take forever to dry, but time and sun will be on my side.
Any better suggestions?
